What are infectiology and microbiology?

Infectiology is a medical discipline that is concerned with the identification, treatment and prevention of infectious diseases. Infectious diseases specialists initiate the investigation of infectious diseases, interpret the results and derive an optimum treatment from this.

Microbiologists detect pathogens and offer comprehensive diagnostics for bacterial, viral and parasitical or fungal infections.

The medical laboratories of Sonic Suisse offer a variety of diagnostic tests for identifying different infectious diseases.

Key infectious diseases that can be diagnosed by laboratory investigations include:

  • Respiratory infections: These include infections of the upper respiratory tract, such as colds and sinusitis, as well as infections of the lower respiratory tract, such as pneumonia and bronchitis. Diagnostic tests include PCR tests, cultures and serological investigations.
  • HIV/AIDS: To diagnose an HIV infection and control its therapy, tests such as the combined HIV antigen/antibody test and the HIV/PCR test are carried out in order to detect the infection and to then monitor the course of the illness.

  • Hepatitis: Hepatitis A, B, C and other forms of hepatitis can be diagnosed using serological tests such as the hepatitis antibody tests and the hepatitis PCR tests.

  • Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI): Infectious diseases such as gonorrhoea, syphilis as well as Chlamydia or Trichomonas infections can be detected from swabs and urine using PCR tests or serological analyses.

  • Gastrointestinal infections: Bacterial infections such as salmonellosis and campylobacter infections, viral infections (e.g. norovirus) or parasitical infections such as amoebiasis can be investigated using stool samples.

  • Skin infections: Infections such as fungal infections (e.g. athlete’s foot) and bacterial infections (e.g. cellulitis) can be diagnosed from swabs and biopsies by means of cultures of skin lesions.

  • Urinary tract infections: These are diagnosed using urine samples.

  • Infections of the central nervous system: Infections such as meningitis and encephalitis can be diagnosed by analysing cerebrospinal fluid samples using PCR tests, serological investigations and cultures.

These are just a few examples of the variety of infectious diseases that can be identified by means of laboratory analyses.

Our services

  • Diagnostic tests: We use innovative as well as conventional tests to identify pathogens rapidly and accurately.
  • Susceptibility testing: We determine the efficacy of antibiotics against bacterial infections to ensure targeted antibiotic therapy.
  • Measuring viral load: For viral infections such as HIV or hepatitis, we offer accurate measurements of the viral load to monitor the course of the illness.
  • Monitoring of new pathogens: Our laboratories enable us to be always on the cutting edge when it comes to identifying and monitoring new infectious diseases.
