Project No. 2: Revitalization of a peat bog

This measure will largely favor the rare and characteristic fauna and flora of peat bogs.

This project, a collaboration between the Canton of Neuchâtel, the Swiss Confederation, Pro Natura and Sonic Suisse, is dedicated to the revitalization of the Joux-du-Plâne (NE) peat bog. This hydrological restoration will allow the characteristic mosses of the peat bogs, the sphagnum mosses, to effectively recolonize the environment and thus recreate the carbon sink through the accumulation of organic matter.

Goals

  • Hydrological restoration of the soil (water saturation of the peat mass)
  • Storage of CO2
  • Conservation of water inside the peat bog in the form of open water bodies
  • Assessment of aquatic organisms characteristic of peat bogs

Execution

  • Autumn 2021
  • Duration: around 2 months
